CHAPTER SIXTEEN

It was well into the evening and Jessie was getting frustrated.

Things had started off well enough. Ryan got the search warrant for Roger Whitmore’s office. When they went to execute it, Jessie searched under his desk and “found” the burner phone. The look on Ryan’s face when she made her discovery wasn’t hard to read. He was disappointed at what she’d done and didn’t like being used to cover for her questionable activity, even if it had sent them down this new investigative path.

Jessie felt the same pang of guilt that she’d had when she first snuck into Whitmore’s office. But again, she reminded herself that it had been for the greater good. Without that phone, they wouldn’t know anything about his extracurricular activities.

She had some concern that the folks at the firm would let Whitmore know about the warrant, despite him being in mourning with his kids. But even if they did, she doubted there was much he could do. He had to have anticipated that his office would be searched. And what was he going to do—ask Lynn the executive assistant if she happened to notice them collecting a burner phone he’d hidden under his desk? That would cause him more problems than the question was worth. No, for the time being at least, he’d keep a low profile and hope for the best.

Ryan was quieter than usual on the ride to the police station, but seemed to warm up once they settled in and started going over the names in the phone in more detail with Beth and Jamil, who was at an impasse on the Plaza killings and had some free time.

They went through the names in the phone in greater depth than Jessie had been able to earlier, hoping to identify each woman and build a profile of her. It was more difficult than one might expect, as Kimberly Kelly seemed to be the rare exception that didn’t care if she was found out. With everyone else, Roger Whitmore only used initials and little personal information was ever shared in the texts. Discussion focused almost exclusively on what was going to happen and where. Some of his paramours used burner phones as well, which added to the challenge.

“You should plug the photos that Whitmore received into the facial recognition database,” Ryan suggested to Jamil, who blushed deeply at the thought of studying a series of images with naked women in quite literally compromising positions.

“I can do that,” Beth offered, sensing his discomfort with the idea.

While the system searched, they did the laborious work of going through each text, looking for context clues that might more quickly identify who the Whitmores were involved with. While that was proving largely fruitless, one thing had become clear to Jessie.

“All of these women seem perfectly happy to participate in this,” she noted. “I haven’t read one comment that suggests coercion, or any threats of retaliation like the one from Kimberly Kelly. No one seems upset at all, much less angry enough to want to kill Trish Whitmore.
